Last year’s beaten Nedbank Cup finalists Kaizer Chiefs have added to their squad as they prepare to launch another assault on the title in 2020 with the addition of Kenya international midfielder Agay Akumu. The 27-year-old joins from Zambia Super League side Zesco United and will add some steel to the midfield. He joins on a free transfer and could make his debut in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 clash at home to Royal Eagles in early February, with Chiefs to sort out his work permit. Akumu is a defensive midfielder who played against Chiefs in the 2018-19 CAF Confederation Cup, when his Zesco side ousted the AmaKhosi from the competition 12 months ago. He had been with the Zambian outfit since 2016, joining from Khartoum  Club in Sudan. Prior to that he was with Gor Mahia in his homeland.

He is also a full Kenya international who played for the country in the last FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Meanwhile, Chiefs have also announced that Ghana midfielder James Kotei has left the club by mutual consent. Kotei did not kick a ball in anger following his arrival at Naturena at the start of the season, and his release opened up the foreigner spot needed to sign Akumu. Finally, Chiefs have also sold defender Lorenzo Gordinho to BidVest Wits, with the centre-back penning a two-and-a-half year contract. Gordinho had been a stalwart of the side in recent seasons, but found game-time hard to come by in the current campaign. Chiefs will be hoping to go one better in this year’s Nedbank Cup campaign after losing 1-0 to second-tier TS Galaxy in the 2019 final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
