Legal expense cover can help reduce the financial impact of a costly legal encounter. It covers costs such as theappointment of lawyers or advocates while you defend or pursue a legal claim or dispute.
Whether you are laying a legal charge against another party or defending yourself, the costs of a legal battle areoften expensive and unanticipated. For a small monthly fee, you can reduce these expenses. Cover is payable if youneed to defend yourself or press charges relating to any of the following types of legal matters:
We offer several legal expense cover options, with cover limits ranging from R75 000 up to R200 000, including bailassistance (the cost of a bail application and the bail amount if you have been charged with a criminal offence).
Cover amount | Bail assistance | |
OPTION A | R 75 000 | R 7 500 |
OPTION B | R 100 000 | R 10 000 |
OPTION C | R 150 000 | R 15 000 |
OPTION D | R 200 000 | R 20 000 |
You will also have an accidental death benefit of R10 000 and access to 24-hour legal advice and support services, such as the drafting of professional legal contracts.
A waiting period is the time from the start of your policy until some or all of the cover under your policy comes intoeffect. If a waiting period for a certain benefit has not yet lapsed, you won’t be able to claim for it.
Different waiting periods apply to different types of claims.
Type of claim or legal service | Waiting period |
Telephonic legal advice | No waiting period |
Accidental death | No waiting period |
Civil and labour matters and criminal charges | Three months from your policy start date |
Family matters | Six months from your policy start date |
It is also important to understand that increasing your cover amount will affect the waiting period. If you increasethe policy cover amount, the waiting periods will apply only for the difference in cover. If you reduce the policy coveramount, it will have no impact on the waiting periods.
Your policy does not cover pre-existing legal matters, which means that if the legal matter existed before your policystart date, you won’t be able to claim for it.
