Make the world your oyster
For an extraordinary experience bear the following in mind:

  • Avoid tourist-type restaurants if you want to absorb some local culture. If you cannot read the menu, opt for the daily specials that are recommended and explained.

  • Watch the world go by over a relaxing picnic lunch in a park or stock up on snacks at a supermarket or deli.

  • Buy a guidebook and take yourself on a personal tour. Many expensive guided tours cannot offer more than a good guidebook.

  • Fit in with the culture – eat and drink what’s local and in season. It’s cheaper, fresher and more fun.

  • Learn local idiosyncrasies. It will earn you respect, save your money, make you streetwise and smooth
    your travel experience.

  • Eat at museum cafés, coffee-shops and small pubs (which offer less intimidating meal options
for the single traveller than big restaurants) or order room service.

  • Use local transport. Buses are a great way to see a city.

  • Dress and act appropriately in the country you are visiting. Ignoring or overstepping cultural boundaries will make you no friends.

  • Do at least one thing to make your experience memorable and personal, even if you’re on a
    quick business trip.

Be prepared
Remember to start planning early, and don’t leave anything until the last minute. By working through the following checklist and setting 'to do by' dates, you can be sure you’ll be adequately prepared without any unnecessary rushing or worrying

  • Order your travellers cheques and banknotes once you have booked your ticket. In accordance with the Exchange Control rules, this must be done within 60 days of travel

  • Pay your bills in advance, or ensure that you have access to NetBank internet banking while abroad.

  • Check whether you need a visa, and allow enough time for it to be processed. Nedbank can assist should you require proof from your bank that you have sufficient funds to support yourself.

  • Check that your passport does not expire while you are abroad.

  • Keep a record of your flight details, travellers cheques and bank cards as well as copies of your tickets, passport and other important documentation. Leave a set at home and keep copies with you, separate from the original documentation. This is invaluable if anything is lost or stolen.
