Introduction

The Sports Trust is an independent organisation established in 1994 by Nedbank and other business, government and sporting organisations to help fulfil the potential of all South Africa’s talented sportsmen and women. Sport is not only enjoyable; it also teaches teamwork, understanding and tolerance.

The Sports Trust aims to nurture and advance sport in South Africa by providing facilities in areas where these have been lacking, and encouraging participation by those who have previously been insufficiently motivated. Where facilities do exist, but are of an inferior standard, The Sports Trust contributes towards their upgrading. The trust also focuses on the identification of young sporting talent and the provision of sports equipment.

The trust is particularly active in encouraging the participation of women in sport, as well promoting the development of sport among our country’s physically or mentally challenged citizens. In all its activities, the trust will help to increase spectator enjoyment, enlighten society about the important role played by sport and create role models to inspire our young aspiring sportsmen and women to help fund the development of sport across all disciplines and at all levels in South Africa.

The Sports Trust is entirely reliant on external funding. It is the only organisation of its kind in existence - it is unique in its independence and its make up. Where else do you see sport, business and government mutually cooperative about projects aimed at the common good of all?

Until a few years ago, The Sports Trust was the only major organisation funding the provision of sports equipment and sports facilities nationally. It has provided over R18 million and 70 projects and boasts projects ranging from multi-million rand sports complexes through to grass athletics tracks. In addition to funding equipment and facilities in outlying and disadvantaged areas, the trust has a discretionary fund that assists with occasional small donations to sportsmen and women on an individual basis, and the so-called ’cinderella sports’.

A Board of Trustees comprising representatives from various founding supporters manages the Sports Trust. These include members from Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA), the South African Sports Commission (SASC), Nedbank, Sun International, Supersport, Grinaker-LTA and South African Breweries. Also on the Board are representatives of the large sports federations including the South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU), the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA), Disabled Sport South Africa, Southern Africa Tour (Golf), Netball South Africa (NSA), Boxing South Africa (BSA), Athletics South Africa (ASA) and the South African Football Association (SAFA).
