Equipment was needed to properly utilize this centre in Mafikeng in the North West Province.
The Sports Trust granted R84 000 for the purchase of the equipment for the following activities: boxing, pool, table tennis, billiards, netball, tennis, squash, basketball, chess, karate and judo.
The community went all out to make the handover day memorable with inspiring speeches, food and traditional dancing.
All the speakers spoke about the unrealised talent in this province which is 83% rural and historically neglected on the sporting front.
“Today’s ceremony provides evidence that this is all changing and that the rural communities are finally starting to receive the sporting facilities they so desperately need,” said Mafikeng counsellor Tumi Plaatje-Molefe whose great grandfather, Sol Plaatje, was a celebrated intellectual and the founding father of the African National Congress.
