Global Structured Trade & Commodity Finance

The team’s mandate is to facilitate structured trade and commodity finance- related transactions, focusing on Africa, but not limited to Africa. Supported by skilled in-house legal and transaction administration teams, the unit prides itself on quick turn-around time in respect of decision-making and closing transactions.

Typical transactions financed include the export of crude oil, metals and minerals and other commodities from developing countries and the import of food, agricultural commodities and refined fuels into developing countries. The tenures of these transactions range from 30 days to 8 years.

Commodity finance transactions are identified as transactions in which the cash flows available for servicing the company’s debt are not reliant on the completion of a new project, although the funds borrowed may be used by the borrower for expansion, as well as for working capital purposes.

Emphasis and reliance is placed on the value of the underlying commodities, the strength and reputation of the offtakers, the ability of the collateral managers/warehouse operators, the market itself, the track record of the borrower and the availability of appropriate insurance.

The team of experienced financial transactors has local and international market knowledge, as well as a wide range of synergistic skills in areas such as finance, law, insurance and various banking disciplines. It has the ability to design financial structures that are most appropriate for clients within their own environments and meeting their unique needs.
