Winter Seminar
This year Nedbank hosted the first Nedbank CA Training Programme Winter Seminar, held at Olwazini, our Learning and Development Centre in the Cradle of Humankind.
Nedbank received over 300 applications, from which 35 third-year BCom (Accounting) students from across South Africa were selected to attend the seminar.
The purpose of this winter school was to expose 35 students to the culture, values and brand of Nedbank Group. The aim was to provide broad financial and leadership insights, as well as to encourage involvement in the community and environmental responsibility.
Some of the highlights of this year's seminar:
- Our delegates were privileged to attend a breakfast, at which our CEO, Mike Brown, provided insight on the value of attaining the CA (SA) qualification, and also provided some valuable points on motivation.
- The delegates were also afforded one-on-one time with our cluster Chief Financial Officers (CFOs), as well as our Group CFO, Raisibe Morathi.
The seminar challenged participants' ability to apply their individuality in a team context, and to demonstrate tenacity, resilience, flexibility and conceptual potential.
What the delegates had to say:
'The winter seminar with Nedbank did not disappoint - instead it exceeded my expectations. I learned about Nedbank and its wonderful culture and why Nedbank has continued being such a wonderful entity. The seminar was also filled with workshops that equipped me with skills and techniques showing how to be the most presentable employee in the most appropriate manner. I was welcomed and accommodated by a wonderful team of Nedbank employees, who were friendly and were all there to ensure that I had a wonderful experience. Thank you, Nedbank, this was one of the most informative weeks of this year.' (Kamogelo Litheko - UCT)
'The winter seminar served as a platform for me to learn more about Nedbank and to experience the culture of the bank first hand. The seminar also made me reflect on my career aspirations. On a lighter side, I had lots of fun and I received four-star treatment, which is always appreciated!' (Lindiwe Nkosi - UCT)
'The Nedbank CA Winter Seminar was a fantastic platform to develop an understanding of not only Nedbank but also the greater economic environment within which the bank operates. It provided me with invaluable learning and insights into banking, financial management, as well as incredible opportunities to meet with influential people within the organisation. I look back on it now and know that it was, most certainly, a worthwhile experience. Thank you for a practical and influential week.' (Robert Bode - UFS)
'I found the corporate culture and teamwork to be an extremely appealing aspect of the working environment and from day one solidified a positive attitude towards the company. The activities run were well mixed, with a variety of intensive work and project-type assignments to test our ability to work under pressure, work with efficiency and effectiveness, as well as fun teambuilding and group cooperation activities.' (Stephen Joffe - UCT)
'We were exposed to the strong culture and admirable ethos of Nedbank and its employees, and this seminar helped me realise that I can identify with these. The seminar was exciting, adrenaline-rushing, informative, educational and, most importantly, FUN.' (Rivonia Govender - WITS)
'I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been afforded the opportunity to take part in the Nedbank Olwazini Winter Seminar. Not only was it fun but it also offered great information about Nedbank and its culture, which helped me out a lot with my decision on where to complete my articles. Best professional experience I've been exposed to thus far.' (Alex Volschenk - UJ)
'Nedbank really went out of its way to make it fun, interesting and educational for us. Thank you very much. Also thank you for handling us like true adults and giving us enough freedom to "think outside the box". I think Nedbank is a very dynamic and people-orientated company, which I like and admire. In my very uneducated opinion, I would advise you to run this seminar again in the future!' (Wim Schoeman - Stellenbosch)
