ACT is inspired to open the hearts and minds of all South Africans to appreciate and nurture the rich diversity of arts, culture and heritage in South Africa by supporting creativity, fostering understanding and enhancing the quality of life of all our people.
VISION To establish a self-sustaining perpetual fund for the development, promotion and preservation of arts, culture and heritage in South Africa.
MISSION To attract and provide funding for the sustainable development and growth of the arts, culture and heritage in South Africa. This is actualised through mutually beneficial partnerships between the corporate, public and cultural sectors focussed on making a positive difference to the lives of all South Africans.
INTRODUCTION The Arts and Culture Trust (ACT) was launched in 1994. It is the first post-apartheid funding agency for the arts in South Africa.
Founding Trustees of ACT are the Ministry of Arts and Culture, Nedbank, the Royal Netherlands Embassy, Sun International, and Vodacom Foundation. This bold partnership brings together public and private sector resources and expertise, demonstrating that the social and economic development of any country unfolds within a specific cultural context. It underscores the view that development itself is a cultural process.
The primary aim of ACT is to increase the amount of funding available for arts and culture initiatives, and to distribute these funds to innovative, sustainable projects that make a significant contribution to South African society.
ACT provides funding for all forms of arts and culture including literature, music, visual art, theatre, dance, film, festivals, community art, arts management, arts education, museums and heritage, as well as multi-disciplinary forms. It supports all aspects of arts and culture such as training, the creative process, the development of sustainable infrastructure and the dissemination of arts and culture.
ACT funds are allocated to projects by the independent Board of Trustees, comprised of leading art practitioners and administrators. By using ACT as the conduit for corporate social investments in artistic and cultural activities, private sector companies rest in the comfortable knowledge that their investment is being carefully applied to greatest effect.
In addition to being a Founding Sponsor of the Trust, Nedbank has established an Affinity Programme; whereby Nedbank clients, through the use of Nedbank Arts Affinity cheque, credit card and savings accounts, generate revenue for ACT.
Under new direction, the Trust has undergone a period of strategic review and consolidation. The Deed has been reworked and focus narrowed to make fewer, but more telling, interventions in the development of the arts and culture sector.
A proactive proponent of the arts, ACT demonstrates its new strategic direction by way of five focus areas, established to uplift communities by helping to create employment, improve creative or administrative skills, foster cross-cultural understanding and generate cultural tourism.
ACT nurtures creative skills by linking the arts to education, employment and self-upliftment. For this reason, ACT supports projects that contribute to improving the quality of life in communities where it is most glaringly needed. This is done in conjunction with extending support to innovative projects, which renew and advance the arts in South Africa. This is work for the common good as well as for self-fulfilment.
In all these endeavours ACT covers the broad spectrum of the arts from grassroots and community-based projects to professional initiatives.
