Approve-it: One step ahead

The best way to win the fight against online fraud is to stay one step ahead of the game. Nedbank has proudly taken that step by becoming the first bank in South Africa to bring you Approve-it, the latest in internet banking security.

Approve-it gives you complete control over fraud and phishing attacks by allowing you to accept or reject any internet banking transaction by simply using your cellphone.

Approving transactions using your cellphone means that you'll never have to enter sensitive information into a computer. This will help prevent you from falling prey to fraudsters and give you peace of mind knowing that your sensitive information will remain just that.

This innovative safety feature will be available to all Nedbank clients in March 2012 and requires no registration whatsoever, so you're already well on your way to enjoying safer internet banking - at no extra cost to you.

For more information about Approve-it call 0860 555 111.

WHAT IS APPROVE-IT?

Approve-it™ is an enhanced security feature that will enable you to authenticate internet banking transactions using your cellphone. It will replace the current one-time password (OTP) system. In future, when you perform a sensitive internet banking transaction, you will receive a message on your cellphone requesting you to authorise that transaction by pressing one of the following options:

1 To accept the transaction and proceed with the payment.

9 To reject the transaction and cancel the payment.

WHAT IS A SENSITIVE INTERNET BANKING TRANSACTION?

Sensitive transactions are transactions that require SMS authorisation. They include:

  • making once-off, instant, recurring and future-dated once-off payments;
  • making once-off, recurring and future-dated prepaid purchases;
  • adding beneficiaries;
  • E-Notes
  • making payments via m-pesa; and
  • opening and managing investment accounts.

WHY THE CHANGE TO APPROVE-IT?
  • Approve-it is a more secure means of authentication because it allows you to accept or reject the transaction via your cellphone, instead of entering any information on the computer while the internet banking session is running.
  • You will also receive an Approve-it message every time a sensitive internet banking transaction is being performed. This message contains the details of the transaction being attempted and you can choose to continue with the transaction or end it.

WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO DO MY INTERNET BANKING IF I DO NOT HAVE A CELLPHONE?
Yes, Approve-it is required only for sensitive internet banking transactions. If you do not have a cellphone, you will still be able to perform non-sensitive transactions.

WHAT IF MY CELLPHONE CAN'T RECEIVE THE NEW-FORMAT MESSAGES?
When you log on to internet banking, a test will be run to see if your cellphone can be detected. If your cellphone is unable to receive Approve-it messages, you will be sent an enhanced OTP message. The notification will be similar to the normal OTP message, but will contain additional detailed information about the transaction being performed, as well as a reference number that must be captured in the reference number field on the computer screen. In this case a reference number will be needed for each sensitive transaction being performed and not only once for the entire internet banking session, as will be the case with Approve-it.

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE APPROVE-IT MESSAGES AND WHEN WILL I RECEIVE THE NEW ONE-TIME PASSWORD?
When you log on to Nedbank's internet banking site, the system will run a test to see if it can detect your cellphone. If it can detect your cellphone, you will be linked to Approve-it for the rest of your session. If it cannot detect your cellphone, the system will switch to sending new OTP messages for the rest of the session.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DO A TRANSACTION WITH MULTIPLE PAYMENTS?
When you do multiple payments, you will receive only one Approve-it message. This message will contain a figure showing the total value of the transactions and number of transactions (eg payments) being done. You can then either accept or reject the message.

WILL I BE CHARGED FOR APPROVE-IT?
No, the service is free and it will automatically be enabled if you've already activated SMS authentication on your internet banking profile. If you have, however, never activated SMS authentication, please visit your nearest Nedbank branch for assistance.

WILL I RECEIVE MY MESSAGES EVEN IF I AM OUT OF THE COUNTRY?
When travelling outside the country, you will need to ensure that you have international SMS roaming activated by your cellphone service provider. Even if you do not activate international roaming, you will still be able to transact on internet banking, but you will not be able to do any sensitive internet banking transactions. Please note that Nedbank clients will not be charged for Approve-it messages when their data roaming is active or when they are overseas.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR THE APPROVE-IT MESSAGE TO COME THROUGH?
The message should take a few seconds to reach your cellphone. However, for various reasons, such as geographical area and cellphone service provider network traffic, it may take a little longer. If you, however, consistently receive your messages late, please call the Nedbank Contact Centre immediately on 0860 555 111 or internationally on +27 (0)11 710 4000 and a consultant will investigate the matter.

WHAT DO I DO IF APPROVE-IT TIMES OUT ON MY CELLPHONE?
If the message times out on your cellphone, you can go to the internet banking screen and press the resend button to have another message sent to your phone.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I PRESS ANY KEY OTHER THAN 1 OR 9 ON MY CELLPHONE?
The system will not recognise any other keys, except 1 or 9. The message will therefore remain on your cellphone until you press one of these options.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I PRESS THE BUTTON TO END A CALL ON MY CELLPHONE?
If you press the button to end a call, the system will recognise that you have been disconnected and a message will pop up on your internet banking screen informing you that the connection is lost and asking you to press the resend or cancel button.

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR APPROVE-IT FUNCTIONALITY?
If you already receive OTP messages, you will be automatically enabled, but if you do not receive OTP messages, you must personally visit a Nedbank branch and register your details. You will need to have your green bar-coded identity document with you and allow 24 hours for the facility to be activated.

WHAT DO I DO IF I RECEIVE AN APPROVE-IT MESSAGE AND I AM NOT TRANSACTING ONLINE OR I HAVE NOT TRANSACTED ALL DAY?
You can select '9' on your cellphone to reject the transaction. You should then call the call center on 0860 555 111 and inform the consultant that your account may be compromised.

WHAT DO I DO IF I RECEIVE AN APPROVE-IT MESSAGE AND I AM NOT A NEDBANK CLIENT?
If you receive an Approve-it or OTP (new) message and you are not a Nedbank client, call the Nedbank Contact Centre immediately on 0860 555 111 or internationally on +27 (0)11 710 4000 and notify the consultant so that he or she can investigate the matter.
