Sport for the Disabled

South African Paralympic team
Nedbank is a longstanding sponsor of the South African Paralympic team having partnered our elite disabled athletes since readmission in 1992. The team continues to perform at its best, and proof of this is the fantastic haul of medals and world records set at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing – 21 gold, three silver and six bronze resulting in Team SA finishing sixth overall out of 147 participating countries. Nedbank recently reaffirmed its sponsorship of the SA Paralympic team bound for London in 2012.

The Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled presented by the South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD)
As a proud partner of Team South Africa, Nedbank has made a substantial investment in the growth and development of South African athletes with disabilities through the local annual Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled. This multi-sport event has proven to be the feeder system for the national Paralympic team and other representative teams. The Championships, which also encompass athletes who are visually impaired and blind, took place at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University from March 25-30 and is the biggest multi disability and multi sporting event for the physically disabled in South Africa.

In demonstration of Nedbank’s ongoing commitment to athletes with disabilities and to Team South Africa the bank partnered with the South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled to launch a four year campaign, building up to the 2012 London Paralympic Games, that was designed to inspire and motivate athletes.

Each year a ‘face of sport for the disabled’ will be selected at the Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled. The chosen athlete will feature on merchandise relating to the campaign. Following on from Nedbank Brand Ambassador Oscar Pistorius, the 2009/2010 face of sport for the disabled is Paralympic triple gold medalist Hilton Langenhoven.

The campaign themes are:
2009. Ignite. It is about starting the first steps, no matter how small.
2010. Spirit. Forging a competitive spirit.
2111. Power. Going beyond your personal best.
2012. Victory. Realising the dream of representing South Africa at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. The culmination of four years of sweat and tears

Nedbank South African Disabled Golf Open
The Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open forms an integral part of our support for people with physical disabilities and is an extension of the bank’s other commitments in this area, most notably the sponsorship of the South African Paralympic Team, the Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled and support for the the First Swing Clinics for persons with disabilities.

Nedbank’s investment in South African golf is well documented and includes the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge and the Nedbank Amateur Series ensuring that Nedbank remains South Africa’s dominant golf sponsor. Nedbank is also the official banking partner to the Sunshine Tour.

Nedbank has sponsored this flagship event for the past three years and has recently renewed its commitment for a further three years until 2011. The 2009 Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open , played at the Randpark Golf Club, went down to the wire with four golfers within a shot of each other at the start of the final hole. Iglin Grobbelaar, the runner up in 2008, held his nerve to secure his maiden Nedbank South African Golf Open championship.

Nedbank Brand Ambassador – Hilton Langenhoven: Sport for the disabled
In keeping with Nedbank’s vision of becoming the most highly rated and respected bank in Southern Africa, the bank has formed an association with well-known and respected South African sporting stars in Hilton Langenhoven and Rene Kalmer, both launched on the 24th March 2010 at the Nedbank Head Office. Each of the individuals selected to represent Nedbank as brand ambassadors possess and demonstrates the highest integrity and credibility and both are regarded as South African role models in their respective activities and communities as well as by the general public. Independent sporting brand ambassadors are selected for their proven ability to display the values of honesty, empathy and humanity – all characteristics of the Nedbank brand.

Langenhoven, who captured the nation’s attention in Beijing with his gold medals in the Long Jump, 200metres and Pentathlon, will also be looking to take another step to defending his titles in London in 2012. Langenhoven, a firm crowd favourite, was also chosen as SASAPD’s “Face of Sport for the disabled” for 2010/2011 and is expected to excel in Port Elizabeth.
