2012 marks the fifth anniversary of the Nedbank Cup or South Africa’s FA Cup as it has become known.
The Nedbank Cup is the only knock out competition of its kind in South Africa and contributes to the development of domestic soccer by giving amateur teams an opportunity to compete against professionals. The format sees 16 Premier League teams, 8 First Division teams and 8 amateur clubs battle it out to see who will be crowned champions.
Staging the curtain raiser to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, by playing the Nedbank Cup final as the inaugural match at the home of South African soccer, has undoubtedly been the highlight thus far.
The total prize money on offer in 2012 of almost R20m makes it the most lucrative cup competition in South Africa, with the winner taking home a cool R6m.
