  • Is it more difficult to open a Nedbank Sport Affinity account compared to a normal account?
    No, clients use exactly the same forms to open a Nedbank Arts Affinity, Green Affinity or Sport Affinity account as a normal account. All that is different is the account type indicator on the form.


  • What are the different ‘affinities’?
    The three ’affinities’ that clients can link their cheque account, credit card and savings accounts to are:
    • Nedbank Arts Affinity;
    • Nedbank Green Affinity; and
    • Nedbank Sport Affinity.


  • Which products can be linked to Nedbank Sport Affinity?
    Products that can be linked to Nedbank Sport Affinity include:
    • Cheque accounts
    • Credit cards (classic or gold)
    • Savings accounts


  • What kind of projects does the Sports Trust fund?
    Projects falling within the broad categories of namely facilities and sports equipment will be considered through an identification process managed by The Sports Trust Projects Committee and ratified by The Sports Trust Management Committee.


  • What is the Sports Trust?
    The Sports Trust is an independent organization that was jointly established by the private and public sectors in 1994 to help fund the development of sport across all disciplines and at all levels in South Africa - from "grass roots" to world-class performers


  • How long has The Sports Trust been in existence?
    The Sports Trust was founded in 1994 (by Nedbank and other founding trustees).

  • Who are the trustees of the Sports Trust?
    The Sports Trust is managed by a Board of Trustees comprising representatives from various founding Trustees and macro-sporting bodies including Sport and Recreation South Africa, the South African Sports Commission and Disability Sport South Africa.  Trustees from the private sector include - Supersport, Sun International, Nedbank, South African Breweries and Harmony Gold Mines.  The rest of the board is completed by contributory Trustees, being representatives of SARFU (rugby), SAFA (soccer), the UCBSA (cricket), SA Tour (golf), Netball South Africa (NSA) and Boxing South Africa (BSA).


  • How are the projects chosen and how is the Trust managed?

    Select criteria have been developed by the Trustees of The Sports Trust in order to facilitate fair and equitable funding of sports development given the inevitable large demand for assistance from a relatively limited pool of resources.

    To qualify for support from the trust where a facility is involved, the project would need to be located in a disadvantaged area and involve the upgrading or building of basic multi-purpose indoor and outdoor facilities and the supply of sports equipment.

    In addition to major projects a monthly discretionary fund provides regular disbursements to less fortunate organisations and individuals on an ad hoc basis.



  • How does the Sports Trust raise its funds?
    The Sports Trust raises funds from various local and international sources and is constantly involved in on-going sports projects in order to boost the profile.  Such projects include the recently staged The Sports Trust Cricket Challenge which was televised live by Supersport, the highly acclaimed Figment of our Imagination which involves many of South Africa"s sporting and social celebrities in a Broadway musical and the prestigious Sports Trust Golf Challenge that takes place immediately after the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City.


  • What is Nedbank Sport Affinity?

    Nedbank Sport Affinity is an integral part of the character of Nedbank. People who choose to become Nedbank Sport clients are not simply product users but become Nedbank’s partners, sharing the bank’s vision of a prosperous and inspirational future for all. Nedbank Sport Affinity enables clients to forge a personal connection with Nedbank and encourages genuine goodwill and loyalty.

  • How does Nedbank Sport Affinity work?
    Nedbank Sport Affinity is underpinned by the Sport current account, savings account and credit card products. Nedbank donates money of behalf of its Nedbank Sport Affinity clients (generated primarily through product usage) to The Sports Trust. The trust is an autonomous bodies; in other words it"s not part of Nedbank - although Nedbank has representation on the committee.


  • How much does it cost clients to become a Nedbank Sport Affinity client?
    There is no extra cost associated with being a Nedbank Arts, Green or Sport Affinity client compared to a normal Nedbank client.


  • Can clients belong to more than one ‘affinity’?
    Yes, clients can belong to more than one ’affinity’. For example, they can have a Nedbank Green Affinity credit card and a Nedbank Arts Affinity cheque account and a Nedbank Sport Affinity savings account, should they want to support each cause. Of course, most clients prefer to ’pool’ their support and channel it into one cause. This choice is entirely up to the individual.


  • What’s the difference between a normal and a Nedbank Sport Affinity current account, savings account or credit card account?

    By choosing a Nedbank Sport Affinity account, clients are ensuring that funds are being donated to a cause that is close to their hearts, with certainty that the money is used productively. Nedbank makes a donation to The Sports Trust, based on a percentage of its clients’ turnover, at no extra cost to them. Clients receive newsletters and can use the website to get regular trust feedback reports and updates on projects funded.

    Another major difference between normal and ’affinities’ accounts is that the faces of the cards and cheque books have colourful images relating to the ’affinity’, or cause, that clients have chosen.  These images are a testimony to the fact that the client supports that cause.



  • What are the funds used for?
    The Sports Trust concentrates on the provision of sporting facilities and sporting equipment in previously disadvantaged areas, as well as the development of sporting talent.


  • How much has been contributed to The Sports Trust to date?
    Nedbank, through its Nedbank Sport clients as well as capital donations, has raised over R15 million for The Sports Trust.


  • What are the advantages of having a Nedbank Sport Affinity account?
    • Nedbank Sport Affinity clients lend support in the form of a donation or contribution, which is used to assist the less fortunate or disadvantaged, to give equal opportunities to all, to help with developing skills and talents.
    • Clients benefit from being able to donate money to a cause close to their hearts, conveniently and in the absolute certainty that the money is used productively.
    • Clients receive feedback and special offers unique to the Sport lifestyle programme they have chosen, which will enrich and add to their quality of life.
    • Clients can feel good knowing they are contributing to a positive and successful future of South Africa and its people.


  • How are the donations from Nedbank Sport Affinity made to the trusts?
    The donations made by Nedbank on Nedbank Sport Affinity clients’ behalf include a percentage of credit card transactions and savings account balance (at no cost to clients).
     
    Nedbank’s donations are paid directly to the trust. The trust in turn allocates the funding to grassroots projects.


  • Who benefits from the funds generated by Nedbank Sport Affinity?

    The trust to benefit from Nedbank Sport Affinity is The Sports Trust, founded in 1994.  Aspiring sportspeople in underprivileged or disadvantaged communities then benefit from the funds that the trust allocates for the provision of sporting facilities and equipment.

    The Sports Trust is an independent trust administered by an independent board of trustees.



  • Who administers the Sports Trust?
    Nedbank does not administer the Trust. It is administered by an independent board of trustees who identifies, funds and supports practical and sustainable projects. For more information on respective trust and its projects, contact:

  • What kind of projects doesn"t the Trust support?
    With the introduction of the National Lotteries Board and Poverty Relief Fund , The Sports Trust has changed its focus and is no longer funding the building of major sports centres ,  such as indoor sports complexes  , but would consider the enhancement of these facilities.  The Sports Trust also does not allocate funding for travel.
