Sport for the Disabled

South African Paralympic team
Nedbank is a longstanding sponsor of the South African Paralympic team having partnered our elite disabled athletes since readmission in 1992. The team continues to perform at its best, and proof of this is the fantastic haul of medals and world records set at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing – 21 gold, three silver and six bronze resulting in Team SA finishing sixth overall out of 147 participating countries. Nedbank reaffirmed its sponsorship of the SA Paralympic team bound for London in 2012. Team SA are on course to repeat their feats in London following an impressive display at the IPC World Championships in New Zealand where the team won 25 medals (nine gold, seven silver and nine bronze).

The Nedbank National Championships for Physically Disabled presented by the South African Sports Association for Physically Disabled (SASAPD)

As a proud partner of Team South Africa, Nedbank has made a substantial investment in the growth and development of South African athletes with disabilities through the Nedbank National Championships for Physically Disabled. This multi-sport event has proven to be the feeder system for the national Paralympic team and other representative teams since its inception in 1992. The Championships, which is the biggest multi disability and multi sporting event for the physically disabled in South Africa, also includes athletes who are visually impaired and blind. The 2011 event took place in Rustenburg from 26 – 30 March.

In demonstration of Nedbank’s ongoing commitment to athletes with disabilities and to Team South Africa, the bank partnered with the South African Sports Association for Physically Disabled to launch a four year campaign, building up to the 2012 London Paralympic Games, that was designed to inspire and motivate athletes.

Each year a ‘face of sport for the disabled’ will be selected at the Nedbank National Championships for Physically Disabled. The chosen athlete will feature on merchandise relating to the campaign. Following on from Nedbank Brand Ambassador Oscar Pistorius, the 2009/2010 face of sport for the disabled was 2008 Paralympic triple gold medallist Hilton Langenhoven an exceptional athlete who is visually impaired and competes in various field & track disciplines. And in 2011 is Paralympic swimmer, Emily Gray.

The campaign themes are:

2009. Ignite. It is about starting the first steps, no matter how small.

2010. Spirit. Forging a competitive spirit.

2011. Power. Going beyond your personal best.

2012. Victory. Realising the dream of representing South Africa at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. The culmination of four years of sweat and tears

Nedbank South African Disabled Golf Open

The Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open forms an integral part of our support for people with physical disabilities and is an extension of the bank’s other commitments in this area, most notably the sponsorship of the South African Paralympic Team, the Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled and support for the First Swing Clinics for persons with disabilities.

Nedbank’s investment in South African golf is well documented and includes the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge and the Nedbank Amateur Series ensuring that Nedbank remains South Africa’s dominant golf sponsor. Nedbank is also the official banking partner to the Sunshine Tour.

Nedbank has sponsored this flagship event since 2007. The 2010 Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open , played at the Randpark Golf Club, went down to the wire with four golfers within a shot of each other at the start of the final hole. Iglin Grobbelaar, the runner up in 2008 and defending champion from 2009, held his nerve to secure his second Nedbank South African Golf Open championship. In that the Nedbank Golf Challenge was playing out its 30th anniversary at Sun City, and in recognition of his tremendous win, Iglin was invited alongside three young black amateurs to participate in the Pro Am.
