As one of South Africa's most popular and accessible sports, running is nothing short of an institution in our country. In fact, with more than 70 000 registered members belonging to almost 1000 clubs and some ½ million social competitors, there are few other sports into which South Africans are as willing to put their hearts and 'soles'.

At Nedbank, we’re committed to going the distance for our clients and where ever possible, we involve ourselves with the communities in which we operate. As such, we have embraced running as a means of touching the lives of all South Africa’s people without the cultural, racial, or financial barriers that still hamper so many of our nation’s other sporting activities. Running is for all South Africans. So, as the bank for all South Africans, we see our sponsorship of running in this country as the perfect fit. However, our commitment to the sport goes far beyond merely contributing financially. Rather, we see our sponsorships of various areas of the sport as a way to help create unique and memorable experiences for the people who participate in, and support the sport.

Nedbank Running Clubs
Early 2008, Nedbank launched eleven Nedbank Running clubs based in 10 cities around the country to match the Nedbank footprint and in essence, bring all running enthusiasts together at a social and competitive level while identifying and guiding talented individuals to excel at the sport. Some 2800 members have signed up to date! The Nedbank Running Clubs are strategically located in Boland, Gauteng (North and Central), Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga, South Western Districts, Western Cape, Vaal Triangle, Central North West and in the “old” Transkei.

Nick Bester serves as the club's national manager. Bester is a past winner of the Comrades Marathon and a multi discipline athlete of incredible proportions. Bruce Fordyce; one of South Africa’s leading proponents of distance running, winner of nine Comrades Marathons and three London to Brighton races; is the Assistant Manager of the Nedbank Running Club and CEO of the Central Gauteng club. Zithulele Sinqe, one of South Africa’s most respected and colourful road and track athletes acts as the club’s Development Manager. He has been instrumental in setting up development programmes in several townships. Mark Struwig joined the team in 2010 and drives the youth and Mzani project for the club.

Nedbank Green Dream Team
The Nedbank Running Club has a big dream for its Green Dream Team, It is ambitious - they want to help South African athletes’ post competitive international standard times on local soil or, better yet, feature on podiums on an international stage. They are serious about road running in South Africa as well as grooming future champions.

The Dream Team consists of a mixture of top South African athletes. They compete in all the recognised distances as well as many of South Africa’s ultra marathons. This elite squad has been individually selected after consultation with experienced managers and coaches. Many are world class runners in their own right and include Zetulele Sinqe, Lungile Rado, Mark Struwig, Gerrie Coetzee, Bruce Fordyce, Johan Brits and Hendrick Ramaala.

When selecting the team some of the important criteria were talent, commitment, youth and the potential to produce internationally competitive running times. “For too long South African athletes have not featured on the international stage and we want to make a meaningful contribution to changing this,” says Nick Bester, Nedbank Running Club National Manager.

The Green Dream Team will be supplemented by a talented squad of promising young athletes that are nurtured by the Nedbank Running Club. Known as the Mzansi Talent Squad they are supported through the base of the Nedbank Soweto Running Club under the careful considered leadership of Mark Struwig and Zetulele Sinqe

Nike South Africa has thrown their weight behind the team and is the technical supplier to the team. Greg Lewthwaite, Nike SA Running Brand Manger said that Nike was particularly excited to be a part of the Nedbank Green Dream Team as there is a wealth of talent and experience “Nike is arguably the world’s leading sports apparel and footwear supplier and we believe in supplying superior product to superior athletes in order for them to achieve their goals and dreams. We are expecting great things from this amazing group of athletes in 2010.” said Lewthwaite.
Nedbank reaffirmed their support for the club, athletes and the management team. “As title sponsors we are delighted to see the Nedbank Running Club kick up another gear and establish itself as South Africa's top running club. We are especially pleased to have Nike put their weight behind the club’s elite runners and we are confident that the benefits of this relationship will cascade down to the broader membership base,” said Patrick Baransky, Nedbank Sponsorship Portfolio Manager.

Comrades Marathon
Hosted by the Comrades Marathon Association, the 2010 edition will take place on Sunday 30 May. The race is always run on the historic Old Main Road between the two KwaZulu Natal cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg with the start and finish points generally alternating annually between the two.
The 85th running of this classic ultra marathon will be a down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban and record interest of 23 000 runners has been received. The "Comrades Marathon Experience" Expo will be taking place in Durban, from 27 to 29 May at the Durban Exhibition Centre and precedes the race where participants come to register for the race, while members of the public get to browse and shop for running and sports related products and services at this health and wellness exhibition.

Nedbank as a major sponsor of the Comrades Marathon Association has also secured rights to the television broadcast on SABC 2 and will thus assist the public broadcaster to help take the event to millions of homes around the country.

An annual feature at the Comrades Marathon, Nedbank will once again recognise both athletes and their supporters through the Nedbank Supporters Spot and Nedbank Green Mile. The location in Kloof, roughly 26km from the end, provides supporters grandstand seating to watch all the running action. Also on offer are refreshments on sale via local charities, a kid's play area for the young at heart, plus music and entertainment. Easy access to the Nedbank Supporters Spot can be gained from the Pinetown alternative highway travelling east towards Durban. All welcome, so come be part of the Action!
