The inaugural Nedbank Cup was played in 2008 after much speculation from the media and fans about who would take on the biggest cup competition in South Africa. The competition is formatted along the same principles as the English FA Cup, where 16 Premier League teams, 8 First Division Teams and 8 amateur clubs battle it out on a knock-out basis to see who will be crowned Champion. The total prize money on offer in 2008 of almost R20m makes it the most lucrative cup competition in South Africa, with the winner taking home a cool R6m.
