The inaugural Nedbank Cup was played in 2008 after much speculation from the media and fans about who would take on the biggest cup competition in South Africa.
Now in its fourth year the Nedbank Cup is the only knock out competition of its kind in South Africa. The Cup is modelled on the English FA Cup and contributes to the development of domestic soccer by giving amateur teams an opportunity to compete against professionals.
The format sees 16 Premier League teams, eight First Division teams and eight amateur clubs battle it out on a knock-out basis to see who will be crowned champions.
Staging the curtain raiser to the 2010 FIFA World Cup by playing the Nedbank Cup final as the inaugural match at the home of South African soccer has undoubtedly been the highlight thus far.
The total prize money on offer in 2011 of almost R20m makes it the most lucrative cup competition in South Africa, with the winner taking home a cool R6m.
Past winners:
2008 – Mamelodi Sundowns
2009 – Moroka Swallows
2010 – BIDVest Wits
2011 - Orlando Pirates
