The Nedbank Old Mutual Budget Speech Competition

The 39th Nedbank Old Mutual Budget Speech Competition.

The Nedbank/Old Mutual Budget Speech competition was established 39 years ago as a means of contributing to the economic growth and excellence in South Africa. The competition has four key objectives:

Promoting the principles of sustainable economic development

Developing future leaders in the field of economics, with a focus on young black university economic students

Making young South Africans excited about economics as a subject and career path

Making the competition part of the National Budget institution

The competition is open to all universities and is focussed on the estimated 40,000 students taking economics at either under graduate and postgraduate levels. The competition is essay based with the Minister of Finance setting relevant and practical questions – one per category – each year.

The competition is jointly hosted and funded by Nedbank and Old Mutual (SA) with strong support from National Treasury. A banquet, where the Minister of Finance is the guest of honour, is held on the night of the budget reading in Parliament.

The 2010 winners announced at the banquet held on 23 February 2011 were:

The undergraduate category:
  • The winner was Salma Kagee from the University of Cape Town.
  • 1st runner up: Mpho Mashishi – University of the Witwatersrand
