The Nedbank Old Mutual Budget Speech Competition.(www.budgetspeechcompetition.co.za)
The Nedbank/Old Mutual Budget Speech competition was established 36 years ago as a means of contributing to the economic growth and execellence in South Africa. The competition has four key objectivess:
- Promoting the principles of sustainable economic development
- Developing future leaders in the field of economics, with a focus on young black university students
- Making young South Africans excited about economics as a subject and career path
- Making the competition part of the National Budget institution
The competition is open to all universities and is focussed on the estimated 40,000 students taking economics at either under graduate and postgraduate levels. The competition is essay based with the Minister of Finance setting relevant and practical questions – one per category – each year.
The competition celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2008 and is jointly hosted and funded by Nedbank and Old Mutual (SA) with strong support from National Treasury. A banquet, where the Minister of Finance is the guest of honour, is held on the night of the budget reading in Parliament. The 2008 banquet was held on the 20 February where the Minister of Finance announced the 2007 winners:
- Lindokuhle Dingiswayo (University of the North West – Potchefstroom campus) – Post Graduate Category and
- Frances Spies (Stellenbosch) – Under Graduate Category.
Entries for the 2008 competition have closed and the 2009 banquet will be held on 11 February 2009
The competition includes The Nedbank Old Mutual National Treasury Mentorship Assistance Programme (The Academy) which comprises a virtual tutor who is available to all students who require assistance. Applicants can access The Academy by contacting the competition administration office. Mentorship is provided by former economic professors and ensures that a consistently high standard of application is submitted.
